Project Case Studies

At Roadways, we have been building Tasmania’s roads and
infrastructure for over 60 years.

Our expertise extends across public and private roads, hardstand areas, car parks, and subdivisions, ensuring that every project we undertake is completed to the highest standards.

Hobart City Council CBD Surfacing Program

Client: Hobart City Council
Location: Hobart CBD
Year: 2018

Program of complex roadworks on high-profile, high traffic-volume sites in the Hobart CBD. Works included: service locations; excavation; removal of redundant tram lines and sleepers; survey and design of pavement levels; removal of existing pavement to a nominated depth of 300mm and replacement with multiple deep lift asphalt layers; replacement and
adjustment of stormwater infrastructure to match new surface; and installation of PMB asphalt wearing surface.

The site contained a number of logistical issues – underground services and adjoining local residents who were kept fully informed throughout the works. Traffic through out the site had to be maintained during daylight hours, meaning crews were required to hit pre planned targets to achieve desired results, works were completed more efficiently than originally programmed.

Works were undertaken between 7pm and 5:30am, with tramlines and line marking reinstated at the end of each shift to ensure all lanes of traffic were open to the public by 5:30am.

Supply and Lay Asphalt Program

Client: Glenorchy City Council
Location: Glenorchy Municipality
Year:
2018 – 2021

This project involved pavement repair, milling of existing surfaces, provision of waterproofing and PMB seals and laying of asphalt overlay. Traffic management and reinstatement of line marking was also required.

Roadways worked collaboratively with Glenorchy City Council to develop innovative solutions to project requirements, resulting in the installation of recycled glass asphalt mix to the Sunderland Street road upgrade.

Hollow Tree Road Upgrade – Stabilisation Program

Client: Central Highlands Council
Location: Hollow Tree Road, Central Highlands Municipality
Year: 2018

This pavement stabilisation project involved stabilisation of 3500m2 of patching over 28.8km of rural road. Stabilisation was undertaken to a depth of 150mm depth with 2% cement. A two-coat final seal was designed inhouse in line with the Austroads seal design method and applied to the prepared pavement.

This project introduced a treatment new approach for the municipality, resulting in a client saving of 50% from the mill and fill option. Relevance This project involved roadworks in a rural location, chemical (cement) pavement stabilisation, re-preparation of pavement seal, re- establishment of table and site traffic management.

Lake Secondary Road Dig-out and Repairs

Client: Department of State Growth
Location: Lake Secondary Road, Hunterstone
Year:
2018-2019

This project was undertaken to repair 1150m2 of pavement at SS24 on Lake Secondary Road following pavement failure due to the presence of spring. It involved excavation to a depth of 300mm to remove the failed pavement; installation of geofabric and subsoil drains; deepening of table drains; and placement of half and full road patches in line with DSG specifications.

The project site contained unstable subgrade, with an active spring both under and adjacent to the road pavement.

Sandy Bay Road Resurfacing York Street to Waimea Avenue

Client: Hobart City Council
Location: Hobart
Year:
2019

These resurfacing works involved the removal of old asphalt and concrete to designed levels and replacement with 3600t of A10E asphalt over a three-week construction period. As part of project works, Roadways adjusted and replaced stormwater infrastructure to match
new design surface level. Careful traffic management was undertaken to ensure two-way traffic was maintained throughout the project works.

This project involved night works in a very high traffic volume residential location, with traffic flows required to be maintained at all times. Building condition reports were undertaken at the commencement of the project as a physical record of any pre-existing structural damage to the surrounding residential buildings.

DSG Road Specific Maintenance Pavement Resurfacing, South

Client: Department of State Growth
Location: Southern Tasmania
Year:
2019 – 2020

All forms of bituminous surfacing works across the Southern region of Tasmania, including spray seal and asphalt works, line marking and traffic management. The program of works included pavement repair, milling of existing surfaces, provision of C170 and PMB seals, asphalt overlays and the reinstatement of line marking.

The delivery program was spread across the available performance period rather than delivering works more intensively in smaller allotments of time. This meant any minor operational delays and disruptions could be absorbed into the available contingency time,
resulting in successful and timely completion of the program.

Mount Wellington/kunanyi Pinnacle Carpark

Client: Hobart City Council
Location: Mount Wellington/kunanyi
Year:
2019

This project involved the design, coordination and installation of 540t of stone mastic asphalt over the existing surface of an alpine carpark in extreme temperature conditions. Careful traffic management and logistics were required for the 4.5m-wide, 13km-long mountain road.

Due to the high altitude of the project site, programming works around inclement weather posed a significant challenge. This was further complicated by the requirement to schedule works around cruise ship timetables to ensure tourist routes were not disrupted, meaning works had to be undertaken in two-day allotments, including establishment and dis-
establishment.

Pavement Marking and Associated Works

Client: Department of State Growth
Location: Southern Tasmania, North-West Tasmania
Year: 2019 – 2022

Works involve periodic re-marking and new pavement markings on resealed and newly

Year: 2019 – 2020

Works consisted of new pavement markings on resealed, asphalt overlayed and stabilised pavement, including long line marking, transverse lines, symbols and retroreflective pavement markers.

Complex traffic management arrangements were required for some sites, including lane
closures and the use of traffic controllers. Liaison with local councils, businesses and property owners was undertaken to ensure disruption to stakeholders was minimised.

Green Treatment Bicycle Paths

Client: Hobart City Council
Location: Argyle and Campbell Streets, Hobart
Year: Ongoing

Huon Road Uphill Widening for Cyclists

Client: Hobart City Council
Location: Huon Road, Mount Wellington/kunanyi
Year: 2020- 2021

The project required the relocation and installation of new underground high voltage electrical and communication cables.

A series of uphill passing lanes on Huon Road were constructed to allow motorists to safely overtake slower-moving uphill cyclists. Road widening was undertaken at various locations in the 6km stretch between Hillborough Road and Pillinger Drive, providing sealed shoulders and separated cycle lanes that allow multiple safe overtaking opportunities and a dedicated safe road space for cyclists.

Works involved the excavation of a narrow widening trench on a steep uphill and winding section of the Huon Highway while under traffic and in all weather conditions.
